Upper Mustang Trek

Day one is your arrival day in Kathmandu. We will come to welcome you at the airport in Kathmandu and transfer you to the hotel. Upon reaching the hotel and checking in to the rooms, we will let you know about our trip briefing meeting.

It is an important meeting so, we will wait until everyone arrives if there are people flying in different flights for the trip on the same date. Anyway, you will get the information about the meeting time.

It is an acclimatization day as well as an exploration day in Kathmandu. You will also have the time to do last-minute preparation on this day if you need to. After you take your breakfast, we will take you for a beautiful sightseeing tour of the cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu. The sites include ancient Buddhist stupas, Hindu temple, and medieval royal palace square. You will explore about the Kathmandu valley civilization since the ancient time. This day tour will give you a better understanding of life in Kathmandu in the past and at present.

We take our breakfast early and check out the hotel to travel to Pokhara today. The day is a long driving day. It is a 200 kilometers drive west of Kathmandu to reach Pokhara. However, it takes about seven hours of drive to reach the destination. But will enjoy the beauty of the Nepali rural settings along the highway. Once we reach Pokhara, we will check into a hotel at Lakeside and go for exploring the town later.

We have two awesome adventures today. The first is a beautiful flight to Jomsom that brings us some unbelievable views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range of the mountains. An early morning flight takes us past the mountains on a short flight to Jomsom. The second is the beginning of trek. It is the first day of trek after landing at Jomsom. We will trek to Kagbeni for about four hours. The walk goes through the valley and eventually reaches Kagbeni is a small and beautiful settlement in the Kali Gandaki river valley where we stay overnight.

We continue on our trek towards Lo Manthang as the ultimate destination of the trip. The destination of our walk today is the beautiful village of Chhuksang. We will trek past another beautiful village called Tangbe where we can see beautiful chhortens. Tangbe is a typical village that offers a unique cultural lifestyle of the region. It also gives us the impression of unique villages in the region with narrow alleyways to walk through. We eventually reach Chhuksang village of ethnic Thakali people to stay overnight.

Our walk today takes us to Samar to stay overnight. It is a gentle day of walk that takes us past incredible surroundings. We continue the walk to Chele, a beautiful village along the trail. This village is also an overnight camp for many trekkers. While walking past Chele, you can see a lot of Tibetan Mastiffs. Samar is a beautiful poplar village that we reach after crossing a pass over Chele. Samar village offers us a nice stay and cultural experience.

The trek to Upper Mustang continues towards the destination of the trip. We are walking to Geling village today. The higher and deeper we go in the region, the sparser villages get. And the occasional villages that we come across look like oasis in the desert. We trek past another beautiful village called Syangmochen where we can see the monuments of deeper religious faith. Eventually, we reach Geling to stay overnight. The village is a small and beautiful settlement that also serves as an overnight camp for the trekkers in the region.

The walk for today takes us to Ghami. It is a walk of around five hours to the destination that takes us past several wonderful surroundings. Beautiful landscapes of the mountains and jagged cliffs keep us amazed throughout the day. We traverse the trail up to a pass (Nyi La - 3,840m) and descend to Ghami. This village is beautiful settlement with a wonderful cultural tradition to explore and observe.

We continue the trek to Charang today. The walk today is going to be the toughest of all since the trail meanders steeply up most of the part and descends a bit to Charang. Although it is a walk just of five hours, it may feel like the entire day. But once we reach the village, we will find ourselves at a beautiful surrounding. There will be enough time for us to explore the village for the rest of the day once we reach there.

The trek today eventually takes us to the Kingdom of Lo Manthang, which is also the final destination of the trip. Charang to Lo Manthang walk is the shortest of the entire trip. In just about three hours, we will reach the walled-city of Upper Mustang. The capital city of the Kingdom of Lo, Lo Manthang is also the center of cultural influence of the region. We reach the beautiful place with enough of our day to wander around.

We have planned a full day exploration of Lo Manthang and the surroundings. The will bring us unique cultural riches and traditions of the region. Exploring the timeless village with ancient cultural wonders is certainly an experience to go for in your lifetime. We will also explore how the simplicity of the life of people in the region is keeping them happy all the time. We will explore the gompas, village, royal palace, and the surroundings to experience an incredible cultural richness of Upper Mustang.

The trip has ultimately brought us to the amazing land of Upper Mustang and its capital – Lo Manthang. Since we have already explored the place and enjoy a rich cultural immersion, we are now ready to trek back. The walk today will take us back to Ghami village to stay overnight. It is a long day of walk but walking to lower elevation will feel much easier.

We trace the trail all the way back to Chhuksang today. It has a different charm to trek back along the same trail as we can get to experience the area from a different angle. Either way, the region looks amazingly beautiful.

The walk today takes us to Muktinath. We have taken the route towards Muktinath instead of Jomsom as we cannot miss the wonderful vibrations of the place. Muktinath is a sacred spiritual site where thousands of pilgrims visit every year seeking the spiritual enlightenment and liberation. Once we reach the place, we will explore and exploit the spiritual energies of the place.

We are on the final day of the trek to Upper Mustang. The trek today takes us to Jomsom along the Kali Gandaki River valley via Kagbeni. We can enjoy the dramatic landscape of the valley and its surroundings. Jomsom is a small and beautiful town amidst the mountains where we spend overnight today.

We are flying to Pokhara in the morning today. The flight is a beautiful adventure that takes us along the Kali Gandaki gorge past breathtaking range of the Annapurna. It’s a short flight of only 20 minutes but the experience is of a lifetime. We will enjoy the wonderful views of the mountains all throughout the flight. Once we are in Pokhara, we will take the day at ease. We can wander around the lakeside; find a massage; go for good food; drink chilled beer and relax. After all, we deserve this luxury after such a wonderful time in the wilderness of the mountains.

We have a long drive back to Kathmandu today. It is another seven hours of drive back along the highway. We can also choose the option of flying back instead of driving. The flight is of just 25 minutes and we can choose this option with an extra payment for the ticket. Once we reach Kathmandu, we have time at leisure to roam around and relax.
